Kilcunda to Cape Paterson - July 1
Sometimes or is it often, Val has crazy ideas and sometimes convinces others to go along with it. On this occasion it was to walk from Kilcunda to Cape Paterson along the beach. The tide and time will be right Val said, all the stars align. Val assured us it was an easy 13kms, maybe up to 16 kms, it will take about 3½hrs, no chance of being washed off the rock shelves, no need to bring lunch just a snack we’ll be finished by lunch.
At 8.30 Jean, Roz, Joy and Heather met Val at the Kilcunda car park. We started walking along the beach, the tide didn’t seem that low, Roz said we should have started earlier, she was right we should have. The walk was going to plan until 16 kms was up and Cape Paterson was a long way away and when we arrived at Harmers Haven the danger of being swept off the rock ledge was a worry. Val forgot to bring a life saving ring and a piece of hay band! A mishap was avoided by a detour, back track a little, get up off the beach, walk along the cliff then back down onto the beach. At the last rock shelf and cliff a couple of us got wet feet it was the safer option we thought than slipping on rocks. 22 kms and 6 hrs later we were pleased to see the Cape Paterson steps leading off the beach towards the town. The Cape Café was closed so an emergency call was made to Ian who picked us up and took us back to our cars at Kilcunda. The Kilcunda Cafe Kitchen there was also closed - we were begging for scraps. It was 3 o’clock! Apparently kitchens close at 2 o’clock! Oh, we should mention the fantastic ocean scenery and bird life, the sand was not too difficult to walk on, perfect weather, great company and lots of laughs through the pain and worry.
Sometimes impromptu adventures are the best. We really did have a great day.
N.B. A reminder for all, it really is a good idea to carry a little extra scroggin!
Thanks Val.

Mt Worth - July 3
Les led us on his annual fungi walk up Mt. Worth on 3rd July. The keen walkers were Clive, Marg and Clive's brother Hilton as a guest, also Heather, Pat, Judy, Graham, Barbara and Sue Stewart and myself (Joy).
We set off along the Waterfall Bower track, at a good pace which soon slowed as we began to see a lot of fungi. We were very fortunate to have Sue in our midst as she has a very sharp eye and excellent knowledge of many types of fungi. We were soon ploughing through deep sticky clay, lots of slipping and sliding - great fun.
And then we were on the Link Track which took us onto the Moonlight Circuit, passing a lovely waterfall. Later we did a detour to another waterfall, some of us slithered down to the bottom to get a better look, and it sure was worth it, simply beautiful.
After lunch, (which was very kindly given to me by Les as mine was still on the kitchen bench, thanks Les), we started seeing cordyceps, a strange fungus which grows out of a caterpillar.
On consulting Mr Google, the ones that grow in Tibet and Nepal are in great demand in China where they cure everything from cancer to impotency.
We had a great day, beautiful scenery, great company and lots of muddy fun. Thanks Les it was terrific.

Mt Vereker - July 2018
Despite a dire weather forecast Tuesday 17th July turned out to be a perfect day for our walk to Mt Vereker and Millers Landing - led by Judy.
We had a good workout walking uphill through the lovely Banksias and Grass Trees. We marvelled at the boulders balancing on the side of the hill and the views of Corner Inlet.
After a short break at the top we made our way down to Millers Landing with its mini mangroves and beach.
Here we enjoyed lunch and each others company, as well as the almost balmy conditions - the calm before the storm to come later that day.
We then made our way back to the cars - walking about 9 kms all up.
Once again we were blessed with our Tuesday Window.

Penguin Parade to the Nobbies
With all of the wet and windy weather that we had been experiencing lately, it was with some trepidation that I drove towards the Penguin Parade car park and sure enough my worst fears were met with very wild weather greeting us as we exited our cars. Looking more like Michellin people than bronzed Aussie bushwalkers we contemplated our next move as the wind grew even stronger and the rain turned to hail. So braving the elements we got back into our cars and drove around to the Nobbies carpark where we met George and the (sort of) sunshine - well at least it wasn’t raining. As the café didn’t open for a further 20 minutes we decided that things weren’t too bad and that we would walk back towards the Penguin Parade area for a while, and so began our 90 minute stroll along the cliff tops. Dressed in multiple layers and our rain-wear we found it to be not too bad although the walk back into the wind was rather testing. We finished with a walk around the boardwalks to view the blowhole, which was not working, before returning to the café dreaming of coffee only to find that the equipment had broken down and that a hot drink was not available!!
With tears streaming from our eyes - due to the cold wind - we headed back to Bean’d in San Remo for a well earned hot drink and snack.
Welcome to Ian and Sue who walked with us for the first time.
